Unified Communications-Ready Solution Reduces Costs, Pinpoints Source of 911 Calls

El PASO, Texas – In the event of an emergency at Socorro Independent School District’s ** 46 campuses, first-responders will be able to determine a caller’s location when 911 is dialed from the educator’s new services-powered, unified communications-ready solution from Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT ].

A safe transition from traditional wireline phones to cost-saving IP requires Enhanced 911 (E911) technology because of the way VoIP is configured. Unlike wireline phones which are physically located at the address received by emergency dispatchers when 911 is dialed, the address displayed by computer-based VoIP phones may be miles away from where the call is actually made. With a VoIP 911 call, dispatchers see only the address of the centralized phone systems unless the exact location of each extension is programmed into the system.

Deployed in conjunction with Nortel channel partner WalkerCom Inc. of Pearland, Texas, the E911 solution for Socorro Independent School District can narrow down the location of an emergency call to a specific part of a building and then transfer that potentially life-saving information to first responders. It can also recognize when teachers or administrators are working at a location different from their usual workplace. Should staff call 911 from their VoIP-enabled computer, emergency responders will be directed to their current location, as opposed to their regular desk.

Nortel’s E911 solution also helps prevent misdials to emergency dispatchers. When 911 is dialed as part of a longer phone number, the call is stopped from accidentally reaching an emergency operator. School district network administrators are immediately notified instead, allowing them to follow up with the caller about the nature of the call.

“Ensuring high-quality education in a safe environment is central to every decision we make,” said Hector Reyna, Computer Services director, Socorro Independent School District. “Nortel’s solution leverages our existing infrastructure to provide us with communications tools that drive efficiencies, while ensuring we are outfitted with the latest E911 technology for safety. The complete solution provides a total cost of ownership we estimate to be four times less than the main competition and helps us save 30 percent in administrative costs that result from relocations of staff. These cost-savings free-up resources that can be allocated to students’ education.”

In addition to phone capabilities, the solution is built with productivity-enhancing unified messaging that brings together voicemail, e-mail and faxes into a single inbox, allowing teachers and administrators to access messages rapidly from anywhere by phone or over the Internet.

It also provides a foundation upon which unified communications can be deployed to connect people faster for enhanced collaboration and more timely decision making. By being able to see if a colleague is on-line and available, employees can determine the quickest and most appropriate way to communicate, removing delays from the organizational environment.

Network Implementation and Support from Nortel’s Global Services portfolio are key components of the offering, which allow the school district to focus on the needs of its students, as opposed to the requirements of its network.

“Organizations need to keep potentially life-saving 911 safety at the forefront when looking to capture the time and cost-savings benefits of IP or unified communications,” said Joel Hackney , president, Enterprise Solutions, Nortel. “Nortel’s E911 solution, with precise location-identifying capabilities, is built into the unified communications-ready solution for Socorro Independent School District and is backed with all the services they need to ensure smooth implementation and operation.”

The solution for Socorro Independent School District includes Nortel Communication Server 1000 (CS1000) , Call Pilot and implementation and support services.
