Birmingham Legal Recruitment Market Remains Active despite the Economic Downturn

WEBWIRE

Birmingham has not been immune to the effects of the credit crunch and the subsequent economic downturn. The legal recruitment market in the UK’s second city has undergone significant change in the last 12 months. The boom in the Birmingham legal market was, for many years, driven by unprecedented growth in property and corporate transactional activity. This in turn had an impact on staffing requirements and demand for commercial property and corporate solicitors was extremely high.

This is not to say that deals are not being done, Birmingham’s great advantage over the London legal market is that it can offer a very similar level of legal expertise at a significantly reduced cost. In the current climate all businesses are being mindful of cost when instructing a law firm and BCL Legal still has a number of mid-level corporate and banking jobs in Birmingham.

Law firms in Birmingham with strong ties to the public sector are doing particularly well and regeneration, projects and certain areas of construction are continuing to require talented solicitors.

The real areas of demand are currently in contentious disciplines. Solicitors in Birmingham who specialise in disciplines such as commercial litigation, insolvency and employment law have never been as busy and it is here where opportunities are in plentiful supply. Birmingham law firms are preparing themselves for increases in instructions in litigious matters and expect staffing requirements in these departments to increase significantly.

Similarly, the firms with specialist insurance departments in Birmingham are thriving and BCL Legal has seen a significant increase in jobs for claimant and defendant personal injury solicitors as well as opportunities within niche areas such as clinical negligence, insurance fraud and professional indemnity.

Despite the doom and gloom, the Birmingham legal market is robust and still presents a number of opportunities for solicitors across the full spectrum of legal disciplines.
