Four Huntsman Sites Achieve Safety And Environmental Milestones

Four of Huntsman Corporation’s (NYSE: HUN) North American sites have recently achieved significant safety milestones and recognition for outstanding safety and environmental performance.

Our facility in Conroe, Texas was recently recommended for recertification for ‘Star’ status in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) for its nineteenth consecutive year in the program. Companies become eligible for OSHA’s Star Program through the achievement of injury and illness rates at or below the national average in their respective industries; and they need to be self-sufficient in their ability to control workplace hazards. Star participants are reevaluated by OSHA inspectors every three to five years for training and safety systems and their incident rates are reviewed annually.

Dean W. McDaniel, OSHA’s VPP Region VI Administrator, commented on Conroe’s recertification: “I see that several of your programs have been enhanced since the previous evaluation. You have made impressive progress toward increasing safety and health at the facility. I am pleased that the injury/illness rates remain below the national industry average, and was particularly impressed with the changes made to improve site emergency response equipment and implementation of the electronic database at your site.”

Additionally, the Conroe Site achieved 2,000,000 working hours without a lost time injury as of August, 2008.

The Geismar, Louisiana site, which is a joint venture with Chemtura Corporation, recently received two awards for environmental stewardship and safety performance. First, the site received a National Achievement Award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP), which works with organizations to achieve environmental benefits beyond those required by the regulations – with a focus on preventing harmful chemicals from entering the environment. The Geismar site was the only major chemical site in the US to receive this award this year. Secondly, the site received an award at the Louisiana Chemical Association Annual Meeting, held October 24th, for the ‘Most Improved Safety Performance: Class 4’, which is for sites with over 400 employees. The site was selected for the award from 54 participating chemical companies from across the state.

Huntsman’s Port Neches plant achieved 1,000,000 working hours without a recordable accident, also in August.

Huntsman’s Charlotte, North Carolina facility received an Environmental Excellence Gold Award from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities in October. This is the fourth year in a row that the Charlotte facility has been recognized for environmental excellence.
