Melodia Women’s Choir of NYC heralds a season of hope with two concert performances titled “Wrapped in Song” in Manhattan on November 15 and 16, 2008.

A 28-member women’s choir, Melodia is endowed with “elegance and ringing tones,” according to commentators at the classic radio station WNYC.

Conducted by Cynthia Powell, the fall concerts celebrate the optimism of the season with women’s voices and harp. The performances are on Saturday November 15 at 8 pm and Sunday November 16 at 4 pm at St. Peter’s Church in Chelsea, 346 West 20th Street, New York City, NY.

The program includes Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” and Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia.” Other works are “Winter Patterns” by Veljo Tormis; “Two Eastern Pictures” by Gustav Holst, and “Wainamoinen Makes Music” by Zoltan Kodaly.

“This concert draws upon the power of women’s voices to cap a remarkable fall and open the way for a season of hope and promise,” said Cynthia Powell, conductor. Celebrated harpist Elaine Christy will perform with Melodia.

Melodia Women’s Choir, now entering its sixth season, creates, discovers and performs works for women’s voices. The repertory of the ensemble is reocgnized for its innovative programming, combining unique classical and contemporary works.

In previous concerts the choir presented the World Premiere of Becca Schack’s “In My End Is My Beginning” and Allison Sniffin’s “Hear Me With Your Eyes,” based on love poems of Sor Juana. To great acclaim, the choir performed Vivaldi’s “Gloria in D” with all-women’s voices.

Melodia has appeared twice in the Symphony Space Wall-to-Wall festivals, where the choir were singled out for praise by the New York Times. The group has performed at Merkin Concert Hall, Queens Museum of Art and were guest artists at the NYC Comptroller Bill Thompson’s Celebration of Women’s History. Melodia has been featured on WNYC, NBC’s “Time Out” as the top music recommendation, Women’s eNews, the Bergen Record and the Vocal Area Network.

The group was founded in 2003 by Executive Director Jennifer Clarke, an arts consultant who has worked with London’s Royal Festival Hall, Royal Court Theatre, and companies in New York including the American Music Center, Symphony Space and Dancing in the Streets.

Cynthia Powell, Melodia’s Artistic Director and founding conductor, is also artistic director of Stonewall Chorale, has directed the choral program of Sarah Lawrence College and was a guest conductor at the Festival Internacional de Coros in Havana. Also a pianist and organist, she has toured with Meredith Monk in Europe and the U.S.
