FLETC Dedicates Artesia Site to New Mexico Senator During 20th Anniversary Ceremony

Artesia, NM .- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) renamed its Artesia training site to the “Federal Law Enforcement Training Center – Pete V. Domenici Training Complex” during its 20th Anniversary ceremony today.

“The Artesia facility is a tremendous asset not only to the Department of Homeland Security, but to federal, state and local partners across the country,” said Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Schneider. “Senator Domenici’s efforts on behalf of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center are a lasting testament to the safety and security of our nation and his life-long commitment to law enforcement.”

Senator Pete Domenici was instrumental in the creation of the FLETC at its headquarters in Glynco, Georgia, and at the Artesia site. The Albuquerque native led the efforts in 1988 to open FLETC - Artesia, when the former Artesia Christian College vacated the campus. He also played a major role in the Congressional actions during the early 1970s to provide authority and appropriations to move the FLETC from Washington, D.C., to its present headquarters location in Glynco, Georgia.

“In rededicating this facility I pledge that FLETC will continue its commitment of providing the best training and facilities for those who protect our homeland,” said FLETC Director Connie Patrick.

The Artesia site was originally established to support training for Native American law enforcement officers, Border Patrol agents, and other federal law enforcement professionals assigned to this region. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the site’s training capabilities were a critical component for the Federal Air Marshals and Federal Flight Deck Officers who trained to better handle terrorist situations and protect the flying public.

Today, more than 80 partner organizations participate with FLETC to train over 60,000 law enforcement professionals annually. The Artesia site has proven significant to the federal law enforcement mission for preparing our nations protectors.

The dedication ceremony included a keynote address by Deputy Secretary Schneider and also included remarks by FLETC Director Patrick, Artesia Mayor Phillip Burch, and the FLETC-Artesia Deputy Assistant Director Woody Wright in recognition of the anniversary and in tribute to the retiring senator.
