World’s Most Cost-effective Remote Communications Solution Available for North Africa

On-demand use of Satellite Bandwidth and Local Connectivity Together Dramatically Reduce Remote Community Transmission Costs

Cairo, 14 October 2008 – Leading provider of cost cutting solutions for wireless and satellite service providers, Altobridge, will be at North Africa’s largest telecommunications event, North AfricaCom in Cairo, from 14-15 October, highlighting its Local Connectivity and Split-BSC Architecture solutions; remote communications technologies with major cost-cutting implications for the delivery of profitable voice and data services to small, remote domestic and enterprise communities throughout North Africa.

The company’s Remote Communities Communications solution utilises two of Altobridge’s breakthrough technologies. Its unique Split-BSC Architecture frees up vital capacity by restricting the use of expensive satellite bandwidth, only using it ‘On-Demand’ instead of ‘Always-On’ - the most efficient use of satellite bandwidth of any system available. The company’s Local Connectivity solution then keeps all local calls local, which removes further transmission costs incurred if local calls are unnecessarily backhauled.

At North AfricaCom, Altobridge’s VP Wireless Solutions, Janne Hazell, will be presenting an important paper entitled: “Local Connectivity – the key to cost-effective connectivity for mobile operators”, which illustrates these two technological breakthroughs in Local Connectivity and On-demand use of satellite bandwidth, and how they combine to deliver the world’s most cost-effective communications solution for remote communities.

Janne Hazell said, “Our Split-BSC Architecture creates a unique, ‘on-demand’ solution, which we consider to be the most operationally efficient on the market today. Then, our Local Connectivity solution keeps local traffic local, removing the costs of traffic being backhauled unnecessarily across the network and delivering one of the most significant breakthroughs in eliminating the costs associated with remote community communications.

“Combined, these two technologies provide mobile operators throughout the North African region, with the opportunity to deliver profitable services that meet their universal communications licensing obligations. New revenues are now possible from small communities of between 50 and 500 subscribers,” Hazell concluded.

Hazell’s paper looks at the challenges faced by operators in remote regions throughout North Africa, including the high cost of transmission to small, isolated communities, and outlines the comparative savings that can be expected when using a standard 1 TRX IP GSM over VSAT installation versus the use of the optimized Altobridge solution. With annual savings per site potentially running into tens of thousands of dollars, operators are now able to provide profitable services to even the smallest, isolated populations.
