Company Received Highest Ranking for Its Compensation, Benefits and Leave for Childbirth and Adoption

NEW YORK - Verizon is once again the only telecommunications or cable company on Working Mother magazine’s list of100 Best Companies for Working Mothers.

This is the eighth consecutive year that Verizon has been named to the list, which recognizes companies that have family-friendly benefits and policies that help working mothers strike a balance between their work and personal lives.

“Verizon knows that their investment pays for itself through employee loyalty, and they realize that productivity depends as much on satisfied staffers as on smart processes,” said Suzanne Riss, editor-in-chief, Working Mother magazine. “By helping employees manage their work/life demands, Verizon is creating a highly motivated workforce.”

The company’s application to the Working Mother 100 Best Companies list for 2008 included data from Verizon’s largest business groups: Verizon Telecom, Verizon Business and Verizon Wireless.

Working Mother 100 Best Companies are selected based on an extensive application with more than 500 questions, including detailed questions about workforce, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and more. The publication also checked the usage, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them. Seven areas were measured and scored: workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs, and company culture.

For this year’s list, the publication gave particular weight to family-friendly policies, flexibility, leave policies and benefits for part-timers. Verizon received its highest ranking in the areas of compensation, benefits, job-guaranteed time off for childbirth or adoption, and the company’s health and wellness programs.

Earlier this year, Working Mother magazine also ranked Verizon among the Best Companies for Multicultural Women. Verizon was among 20 companies recognized for cutting-edge policies and practices that support African-American, Asian, Latina and Native-American women in the workplace.

For the sixth consecutive year, LATINA Style magazine has ranked Verizon among the Best Companies for Latinas to Work. Verizon also ranked higher than any other telecommunications or cable company on BusinessWeek’s 2008 list of Best Companies to Launch a Career.

For two of the last three years, Verizon has ranked No. 1 on DiversityInc magazine’s list of Top 50 Companies for Diversity.
