Assessments of Dow’s Texas Gulf Coast Sites Show No Major Damage

WEBWIRE

The Dow Chemical Company reported today that no apparent significant structural damage was found by its investigation crews at any of its Texas Gulf Coast facilities impacted by Hurricane Ike.

The Company has now mobilized maintenance and operations teams to bring utilities back on line as soon as it safe to do so. Start-up operations, which could take several weeks to complete, are currently being evaluated at each site based on a number of factors, including the availability of raw materials, personnel and transportation logistics. Safety and status assessments will continue throughout the process.

Dow’s sites in Freeport, Clear Lake and LaPorte, as well as the Union Carbide facilities in Texas City and Seadrift successfully implemented their hurricane preparedness plans and were safely shut down before Hurricane Ike made landfall. The Company’s business centers, including the Houston Dow Center, were also closed. All personnel have been accounted for and there have been no reports of injuries to hurricane duty crew members at any of the facilities.

Dow is asking that affected personnel adhere to guidance from local authorities regarding the timing for returning to their homes and regularly check www.dow.com for additional information on returning to work. Power availability continues to be a major issue for southeast Texas. The Company continues to work closely with local officials and emergency responders to assess the needs of communities and personnel affected and to provide support and assistance as needed.

Dow’s site in Plaquemine, Louisiana and Union Carbide’s St. Charles Operations in Hahnville, Louisiana, which were impacted by Hurricane Gustav, were not directly affected by Hurricane Ike and continue with their recovery and start-up.

The Dow Chemical Company Foundation recently announced that it will donate a total of $500,000 in Louisiana to provide assistance at the local, regional and state levels. The sites have also been helping their affected employees.
