BAE Systems Receives $5 Million Contract for Air Warrior Flexible Body Armor
PHOENIX, Arizona ─ BAE Systems has been awarded a $5 million contract from the U.S. Army for Air Warrior Flexible Body Armor (FBA). The FBA protects Army aviators and aircrew members from fragmenting munitions and handgun threats. Air Warrior is a modular system that provides aviators with advanced life support capabilities.
“The Air Warrior FBA system allows the Army’s aviation community to fly its missions at a higher protection level" said Sean Martin, BAE Systems’ director for business development of Individual Equipment. “This system utilizes a state-of-the-art design and allows the aviator and crew member to operate at a higher protection level within their environment.”
The system increases freedom of movement at flight controls, improves mobility to safely operate aircraft systems, enables ingress and egress from the aircraft and offers enhanced comfort and cooling while increasing mission duration time in a fully adaptable protective ensemble. The FBA can be upgraded for added protection against rifle bullets by inserting the Small Arms Protective Insert plates.
Issued under a multi-year contract in August 2003, this order brings the total accumulated value to $41 million. Production for FBA will be completed in Arizona with deliveries scheduled for completion by October 2009.
BAE Systems employs approximately 700 employees at its Arizona facilities and has approximately 252,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space at these locations. The Individual Equipment business unit is a world leader in the development and manufacture of individual tactical systems for militaries and homeland security forces. Operating 12 factories with over 2,300 employees around the U.S., Individual Equipment manufactures head-to-toe integrated survivability products including body armor, vests, hydration systems, assault packs, helmets, flotation collars, parachutes, air crew ensembles and other protective products.
