Average household will save approximately $170 next month

Edmonton...The average household in Alberta will save approximately $170 on their heating bills in January thanks to Alberta’s unique natural gas rebate program.

“The average household uses 23 gigajoules of natural gas in January, which is the time of year when gas usage is at its highest,” said Energy Minister Greg Melchin. “As we enter the new year Albertans will continue to receive benefits from Alberta’s one of a kind natural gas rebate program that provides a measure of stability and protection when consumers need the assistance most.”

This is the fourth consecutive month that Albertans will receive a rebate. The program is triggered automatically when two of the three major gas companies charge regulated rates over $5.50 per gigajoule. For January, Alberta consumers on the regulated rate system will receive a natural gas rebate of $7.29 per gigajoule. Most consumers will see the January natural gas rebate as a credit on their bill.

Earlier this fall, the government added October 2005 as a rebate month under the Natural Gas Rebate Program for residential and industrial consumers. All eligible homes and businesses, regardless of whether they pay the regulated rate or are part of a competitive contract, receive rebates under the Natural Gas Rebate Program.
