Smarter Electronics Save Energy, Reduce Electric Bill

Seoul. - Talk of rising energy prices has prompted many people to consider investing in new home electronics and appliances that promise to reduce electric bills thanks to improved energy efficiency. This thrifty thinking has another added benefit: using less energy is also good for the environment.

Determining where energy can be saved can seem daunting. In most homes there are televisions, computers, refrigerators, microwave ovens, lamps, battery chargers, cordless phones and numerous other gadgets and gizmos plugged into the wall.

“Start small and make additional improvements as you can,” said Simon Kang, CEO and President of LG Digital Display. “One easy thing to do is replace light bulbs with compact florescent types. They cost a little bit more than regular bulbs but last many times longer and use far less electricity.”

LG Electronics, a major player in the global flat panel display market, is taking a proactive approach to energy and environmental issues, enhancing its expertise and capabilities in these areas. Below are some examples of LG products that can help save energy in the home:

Scarlet LG60 TV with Intelligent Sensor uses up to 69.5 percent less electricity

Televisions use a significant amount of household energy. While sleek flatscreens may be more efficient than projection or CRT TVs of the same size, the flatscreens that most people buy are far larger than the TVs they replace. According to the test results from TÜV SÜD, a prominent European testing, inspection and certification organization, the Scarlet LG6000 TV with Intelligent Sensor technology uses up to 69.5 percent less electricity than older models of the same size.

These findings were also confirmed both by the Korea Electric Testing Institution and the Center for Electrical Power Information and Technology Studies at the University of Indonesia . The Underwriters Laboratory , a world leader in product safety testing and certification located in the Unites States found similar results.

The aforementioned Intelligent Sensor, an LG exclusive, uses a 4,096-step algorithm that automatically adjusts the TV’s settings for optimal picture quality. In this process it not only changes settings like color saturation and contrast, but also the intensity of the TV’s backlight, the component that uses the most power. In other words, this technology means better picture quality and energy savings.

This is the same technology that helps other LG LCD TVs achieve their energy efficiency and picture quality. The Intelligent Sensor technology can be found on a number of LG’s LCD TV models including the LG5000, LG6000/6100 and LG7000.

LG plasma TVs also have Energy Saving mode which reduces energy consumption by up to 43 percent. This considerably improves picture quality according to ambient light while also saving power by reducing unnecessary brightness. It also allows audiences to enjoy TV for long periods of time without eye fatigue by giving them a soft and natural picture. This smart feature is incorporated into all of the LG plasma TVs.

W52TE series monitor to reduce energy consumption by up to 50%

For those who work from home, use computers for their hobbies or simply enjoy surfing the internet for long periods of time, computer monitors can also add a significant amount to the monthly electricity usage. LG recently released its W52TE series of energy efficient monitors, which reduces energy consumption by up to 50 percent compared to other monitors of the same size.

The 19-inch model only consumes 20 watts under normal conditions and the 22-inch model only consumes 22 watts. That’s just slightly more than the energy efficient light bulbs mentioned earlier. In standby mode the monitors only pull 0.3 watts, far less than competitors.

Businesses can also benefit from LG’s environmental commitment. The LG DX630 and DX540 projectors also received eco-friendly certification from Korea’s Ministry of Environment. These projectors include no hazardous materials and are designed to be easily recycled. In particular, the DX630’s noise level is one of the world’s lowest among 3000 ANSI-Lumens grade business projectors.
