Secure Network Bridges Communication Gaps Among 47 Branches Across Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Staff at 47 branch offices of the Bank of Panhsin (BoP) are collaborating more effectively than ever after the bank implemented a unified communications solution from Nortel*[NYSE/TSX: NT].

As one of Taiwan’s largest banks, the Bank of Panhsin had long relied upon a legacy communications network in which each branch operated separately. BoP realized that a more consistent communications system, implemented across every bank branch, would streamline operational costs and allow employees to work together more efficiently than before.

BoP implemented a Nortel unified communications solution that has simplified communications among bank branches by breaking down the barriers across email, voice, video, conferencing, presence and other applications. Built using Taiwan communications provider, Far EasTone’s VPN services, the secure new network has enabled the bank’s employees to find other employees with a simple name lookup, and provides crucial capabilities such as voicemail, call logging, and password-protected access to voicemail anywhere, any time.

“In high-pressure banking environments, communications networks must empower employees with fast, cost-effective and secure communications capabilities that help them deliver superior customer service,” said Tomy Lee, senior vice President, Bank of Panhsin. “Nortel’s unified communications solution has lowered our network management costs while improving customer service by empowering employees to collaborate more efficiently and effectively than ever.”

“Banks face unique challenges in connecting large numbers of small branch offices spread over a wide area,” said YK Tsai, general manager of Nortel Taiwan. “Bank of Panhsin’s unified communications investment has not only simplified its secure communications infrastructure, but offers new opportunities to increase its competitiveness by improving employee efficiency and customer service.”

Bank of Panhsin’s upgraded network was built with Nortel Communication Server (CS 1000) and Business Communications Manager (BCM 50). The CS 1000 is a server-based, full-featured IP PBX providing over 750 world-class telephony features, while the BCM 50 is an all-in-one, affordable platform for converged voice and data communications that supports digital and IP telephones, enabling small to medium sites to benefit from advanced convergence capabilities. Gartner, Inc. positioned Nortel in the Leaders quadrant of its ’2007 Unified Communications Magic Quadrant’ report.
