ANN ARBOR, Mich.—“Between the Lines: A View Inside American Politics, People, and Culture” is a collection of “Newsweek” articles written by senior editor and columnist Jonathan Alter that chronicles the last quarter-century of American political history. The book has been published by Borders under its State Street Press imprint and will be sold exclusively at Borders and Waldenbooks stores and on Borders.com beginning Tuesday, Aug. 12. “Between the Lines” will be featured on front-of-store displays in Borders and Waldenbooks stores nationwide and promoted through an online marketing campaign, which will include a feature in the Borders “Shortlist”— the retailer’s weekly e-mail for its Borders Rewards® loyalty program members that includes information from expert buyers on hot titles as well as discounts and special values. There are over 27 million Borders Rewards members.

For more than 20 years, Alter has witnessed the biggest events of our time. He was in the Soviet Union when communism was collapsing, in Florida during the historic 2000 recount, at ground zero just after 9/11, on an aircraft carrier on the eve of war with Iraq and in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Featuring insightful articles about these events and many others, “Between the Lines” assembles some of the best work from Alter’s career at “Newsweek.” The book reflects Alter’s eclectic interests—it includes extensive analyses of the Bush and Clinton families; profiles of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, Warren Beatty, Paul McCartney and many others; and reflections on his personal life, including his battle with cancer.

“Between the Lines’ is an important collection of articles from one of society’s most astute commentators,” said John Tewsley, history and politics buyer at Borders Group. “Alter’s work puts the present in perspective, using history at its base and building outward. He says what a lot of people are thinking but often are too timid to express. Readers will be intrigued with his insights and how he seems to capture so acutely the current state of America and the world,” he added.

Alter is an award-winning columnist, television analyst and best-selling author of “The Defining Moment: FDR’s Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope.” In addition to his duties at “Newsweek,” he is also a contributing correspondent and analyst for NBC News, appearing regularly on “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” and other network and MSNBC programs. A Chicago native and Harvard graduate, Alter lives in Montclair, New Jersey, with his wife, Emily Lazar, and their three children.
