New Simpson Bay Village Market Area in St. Maarten: Shops, Restaurants, Traditional Fish Market

(Simpson Bay Village, St. Maarten) A special ceremony will be held on July 25th, 2008 in Simpson Bay Village on the island of St. Maarten to announce the grand opening of the new Simpson Bay Fish Market. Located at the village bridge, this new market will be home to several craft shops, restaurants, a bar, and a traditional fish market designed to remind visitors of an earlier era in St. Maarten’s history.

The fish market was designed to recreate the atmosphere of ‘Fish Alley’, the place for fresh fish or a meal made from the Catch of the Day many years ago in nearby Philipsburg. Fish Alley disappeared over time with the rapid development of the town. The new Simpson Bay Fish Market was completed and reopened on April 11th this year. Fishermen immediately began utilizing the stalls to sell their fresh ocean catch to the public and the market is seeing a lively business. This new market complex is designed to embody the traditional spirit of Simpson Bay as a fishing village, while maintaining modern standards of food handling and cleanliness.

The bar, restaurants, and local craft spaces filled the fish market area quickly. Famed local chef Johnny Bridgewater of ‘Johnny B Under the Tree’ is taking up residence in the village.
