NEW YORK, NY - Thomson Reuters today announced Reuters news editor Brian Rhoads as Reuters Managing Editor for North, Central and South America, effective Sept 29 2008.

Rhoads, 42, is currently North Asia Editor for Reuters, responsible for Reuters news coverage across China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan, and is based in Beijing. He will move to New York to take on his new post after the Beijing Olympics. As Managing Editor for the Americas, Rhoads will oversee a staff of about 650 journalists for text, TV, pictures, video and online. He will report to Global Managing Editor Betty Wong, 44, also based in New York, who previously held the role as Americas Managing Editor.

Rhoads, who is fluent in Mandarin, has worked at Reuters since 1996 and his previous roles include China bureau chief, Shanghai bureau chief and senior copy editor.

“Brian’s deep knowledge of China and the region will be an asset in the Americas for our journalists as well as our customers,” Wong said. “I look forward to his joining the managing editors group which also includes Europe, Middle East and Africa Managing Editor Mark Thompson based in London and Asia Managing Editor Adrian Dickson based in Hong Kong.”

Currently Reuters North Asia Editor, Brian is one of Reuters most senior journalists in China, where he has been reporting for the past eight years. He has seen the Chinese leadership transition from Jiang Zemin to the younger generation of leaders headed by Hu Jintao, the surge in global interest in China’s economy, and a half dozen rounds of six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear crisis. He covered Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to Washington in November 2003 and was on the team of senior Reuters journalists who interviewed Premier Wen the following April, and again in 2006. From 2000 to 2001, Rhoads served in Shanghai as bureau chief, reporting on and overseeing coverage of China’s developing financial markets.

Brian joined Reuters in 1996 and worked as an editor on the news production desks in Hong Kong and Singapore for five years. He has edited or reported APEC meetings in Shanghai, Auckland and Kuala Lumpur, ASEAN meetings in Brunei and Singapore, and Suharto’s final election in Indonesia. He has been managing editor for Reuters across the North Asia region since 2007. Before joining Reuters, he worked as a general assignment reporter for daily newspapers in the San Francisco Bay area. He first came to China on a volunteer program to teach English at a university in Beijing.

Brian holds a BA in political science from Stanford University.
