BT’s chairman Sir Michael Rake today presented his first Chairman’s Awards at the BT Tower in London. The BT Chairman’s Awards are the highest accolade of one of the company’s most long-running and esteemed employee charity schemes - BT Community Champions.

A total of 15 awards and £23,000 was distributed at today’s ceremony and winners were selected in five categories – Community & Culture; Sport; Education, Development & Awareness, Youth and the new category Emerging Impact. Seven runners up were also chosen for each category. The BT chairman personally selects the winners of the Chairman’s Awards from hundreds of applications short-listed by a judging panel.

Keith Dickens, a business support and technical consultant with BT in Ipswich was awarded the highest honour, the £5,000 outstanding achievement award. Keith won the award on behalf of Agoonoree Scout Camp, a group that enables scouts with disabilities to enjoy a summer camp, by assisting the integration of disabled and able bodied Scouts both male and female to participate in camping and outdoor activities.

Dickens said: “When I first became involved with Agoonoree Scout Camp I never believed it would be such an important part of my life. Taking part has been extremely valuable to both my personal and professional life. The skills I have developed throughout my career within BT and my time as chief of staff at the camp have been interchangeable, each one complimenting the other. To have my voluntary work recognised by my employer makes me feel valued as a person and an employee of BT and I am honoured to have been short-listed above all the other hundreds of entries from across the company.”

Sir Michael Rake said: “I am very proud as the new chairman of BT to judge such outstanding applicants. The dedication of BT people is simply inspirational. It is imperative that we recognise and encourage our people throughout the UK and across the world and so I congratulate Keith and commend his selfless commitment to the Agoonoree Scout Camp.”
