Alcatel honored for "Best New Product" at Light Reading’s Leading Light Awards

Paris, December 15, 2005 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that its 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS) was honored with the “Best New Product” award by Light Reading. According to Light Reading, this award goes to the company that “has developed a market-leading product that, through engineering and technical excellence, best enables the deployment of profitable, next-generation telecommunications services.” The award was presented last night at an awards dinner following Light Reading’s Telecom Investment Conference in New York City.

Key criteria in Light Reading’s selection of the Alcatel 1850 TSS, from a field of more than 300 entrants, were the immediate traction the product is gaining on the market with big-name carriers, as well as its revolutionary ’Universal Switch’ technology, which enables the switching of anywhere from 100% TDM to 100% packet traffic, without limitation. With this radically innovative approach, transport becomes independent of the processing technology - whether time division multiplexing (TDM) or packet, enabling carriers to migrate to Ethernet transport at the pace they want.

Furthermore, operational procedures are harmonized and opex savings generated by the integration of cross-layer network management and control planes, including generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS), which span both the transport and data worlds.

“As the world leader in optical networking, our commitment is to constantly enhance our product portfolio and offer our customers a compelling value proposition that addresses their evolving network requirements,” said Romano Valussi, President of Alcatel’s optical networking activities. “We are honored to receive Light Reading’s award for this new product, which breaks new ground in network layer convergence and opens up new service delivery options to carriers.”

Light Reading’s Leading Light Awards honor top public and private telecom equipment and services companies and their executives for their outstanding achievements in the telecommunications industry.
