Hundreds Seeking Compensation for Food Poisoning After Staying at Hotels in Egypt

Travel law solicitors at Manchester law firm Pannone LLP are handling hundreds of compensation claims for British tourists who suffered from food poisoning sickness after staying at several hotels in the Egyptian Red Sea resorts of Sharm El Sheikh and Taba.

Andrew Morton, who heads Pannone’s travel compensation claims unit, says his team are handling hundreds of food poisoning cases from a range of hotels in Egypt, including the St George’s Three Corners, Concorde El Salam Red Sea Holiday Village, LTI Tropicana Grand Azure and Grand Plaza hotels, all in the holiday resort of Sharm El Sheikh and the Moevenpick Resort Hotel and the Intercontinental Hotel in Taba.

Mr Morton added that it is likely that other hotels in both resorts have been affected by the bug, which causes severe stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Salmonella confirmed
Water supply and food contamination are thought to be spreading the illness and to-date there have been confirmed cases of salmonella, cryptosporidium, shigella and giardia. Andrew Morton said, “This is a very serious outbreak of illness and the bug is affecting a lot of people. Many of the holidaymakers are returning home saying that their holiday tour reps ignored their complaints or even worse, told them that they were just suffering the effects of too much sun or an excess of alcohol. We are investigating the complaints very seriously and will be taking legal action where appropriate.”

Morton said that it is important for anyone who was ill whilst staying at or visiting these resorts should see a doctor when they return to the UK and that if they are dissatisfied with the treatment by their tour operator it is worth taking legal advice.

Andrew Morton concluded “The good news is that holidaymakers seeking compensation have the benefit of powerful consumer legislation in the Package Travel Regulations 1992. These regulations entitle the people who suffered from the sickness that ruined their holidays to claim for compensation against the tour operator in the UK, under UK law.”
