Benefits of broader, synchronous, coverage accrue to popular Athens radio broadcaster

CINCINNATI, December 14, 2005 — Harris Corporation’s (NYSE: HRS) Broadcast Communications Division today announced that Skai Radio Group, owners of Greek radio stations Skai 100.3 FM, Melodia 99.2 FM, Red 96.3 FM and Angel 88.9 in Athens achieved dramatic gains in coverage with the installation of Harris’ popular Intraplex® SynchroCast® digital multiplexers.

The Intraplex SynchroCast digital multiplexers and timing modules reduce transmission costs by combining voice and data streams on a single channel, while ensuring greater coverage areas by simulcasting with multiple overlapping transmitters operating on the same frequency. The Intraplex SynchroCast multiplexers use GPS satellites and precision digital timing to ensure reliable audio reception by automatically adjusting delays and “locking” together signals from multiple transmitters, thus reducing interference and annoying receiver artifacts.

Athens is surrounded by three mountains. Mount Parnitha reaches 1300 meters, Mount Ymittos is 950 meters tall and the very rocky Mount Egaleo sits at 450 meters. Interspersed among these are six large hills of up to 300 meters. According to Skai Radio Group Technical Manager George Katsiyiannis, "Local building regulations could be charitably described as ’haphazard.’ Six- and seven-floor buildings are sandwiched between two- and nine-floor structures, and every other combination you can imagine. For effective radio transmission and reception, this is anarchy.

“SynchroCast® enables us to overcome these obstacles by ringing the market with efficient, synchronised transmitters; and the additional ability to synchronise signal frequency boosters for the numerous dead or shadowed zones is even more important given our topography.”

Skao, Melodia and Red were the first to benefit from the Intraplex system, and the expansion now includes Angel 88.9, enabling Skai Radio Group to provide clear, synchronous radio across the entire southeast region.

“We’re very satisfied with the Intraplex SynchroCast system,” adds Katsiyiannis. “It operates successfully across the entire southeast, which is very difficult terrain. As a result, we now command 40 percent of our region’s listeners, so we like it very much. We have used Harris products for the past 15 years because we think that Harris systems are the most efficient in the broadcasting industry.”

SynchroCast® is based on the Intraplex STL PLUS® and AudioLink PLUS™, the popular digital STL systems that support bi-directional transport of program audio STL/TSL, remote control, LAN/WAN data and telephone service on a single T1 or E1 digital line over leased T1 or E1 circuits, microwave or spread spectrum radio links, or fibre optic links.

About Harris Intraplex® SynchroCast® Digital Multiplexers
SynchroCast multiplexers provide carriers and public safety organizations with functionality that enables continuous communications across wide geographies on the same channel without having to manually change frequencies. SynchroCast® technology, originally developed and refined for use in land-mobile radio systems, makes this type of broadcast possible by integrating GPS satellite receivers and precision digital delay. The GPS receiver delivers a precise timing reference to the studio and each transmitter site while the digital delay modules calculate and introduce a precise amount of additional delay. Working in tandem, these enable exact alignment of the transmitted audio signals, resulting in dramatically increased mobile radio coverage.
