Subang Jaya, July 2008 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), Telekom Malaysia (TM) and Subang Jaya Municipality Council (MPSJ) have jointly set up a Public Internet Access Centre (PIAC) for the convenience of residents, the organizations announced today. Located at the MPSJ building, the PIAC is expected to further boost community service for the area via the provision of an easy to use Internet access facility.

Subang Jaya residents visiting the MPSJ customer service centre now will be able to access the Internet using their WiFi-enabled devices free of charge while waiting for their turn to meet with the service counter officers.

This joint initiative forms a platform for the three organizations upon which they can work together to create a communications infrastructure accessible to the public and at the same time fulfilling part of their respective corporate social responsibility obligations.

“The joint initiative to provide free Internet access by the three parties is indeed timely and beneficial to the people, especially in the wake of calls for austerity due to an anticipated rise in the cost of living in general while continuing to strive to improve the overall standard of living ”, said MPSJ President, Dato’ Adnan Md. Ikshan. “The PIAC project demonstrates that by pooling our resources together we can minimize the cost of setting up such communications infrastructure, the services of which are increasingly being sought after by the public ”.

“Corporate social responsibility has always been an integral part of TM’s business strategy,” said Zulkapli Mustafa, General Manager TM Retail MSC. ‘As the main coordinator of the PIAC project, we believe that a partnership model involving a local authority, such as MPSJ, Alcatel-Lucent, an experienced and well-respected infrastructure provider, and TM being a service provider, could leverage their respective resources and expertise to provide a service that truly benefits the whole community ”.

Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia Country Senior Officer and Managing Director, Pierre Cheyron added, “As a leader in the fast-evolving telecommunications technologies, applications and services industry, we are eager to make the most of the opportunities offered by our technologies to help Malaysia become an information-based society. We aim to sustain our global technological leadership and help the world communicate better, while meeting our obligations to the communities we live and work in. This commitment to social responsibility is one of Alcatel-Lucent most enduring important corporate values.”
