Shenick and Ciena Optimize Full Two-Way Active Measurement Protocol Testing for Enhanced Network Performance

Burlingame, Calif.- Shenick Network Systems, provider of per-flow IP communication test and monitoring systems, announced that Ciena® Corporation, the network specialist, is using Shenick’s diversifEye™ to test full two-way active measurement protocol (TWAMP) compliance for its customers.

The TWAMP protocol defines a flexible method for measuring round-trip IP performance among any two devices in a network that supports the standard, such as measuring time delay on a call. Full/complete TWAMP testing enables carriers to go one step further and TWAMP test each node in the network for ultimate end user quality of service (QoS). With Shenick’s full TWAMP testing, Ciena’s test engineers can perform a network “health check” by measuring the complete IP performance of underlying transport, right down to an individual flow basis, through cooperation between network elements that have already been deployed.

Operators of large enterprise networks, like those of Ciena’s customers, benefit by having a flexible choice of solutions and full visibility into network performance via interoperability among all devices deployed in their networks. It also gives network providers a way to identify congested parts of a network or infrastructure and deliver QoS to end users.

“Measuring the performance of IP networks with standard protocols has always been a challenge,” said Robert Winters, CMO, Shenick Network Systems. “Today Shenick’s full TWAMP capabilities can test and monitor what’s happening on a network right down to an individual flow basis for a variety of different applications; voice, video and data. This brings tremendous benefits to companies like Ciena and its customers, who want to deliver QoS to end users.”

“Several of our customers have standardized TWAMP as the test of choice for measuring the health of a network,” said Mike Nielsen, vice president at Ciena Corporation.“ Shenick is a key partner for Ciena as we ensure our customer networks are TWAMP compliant.”

Shenick’s diversifEye10G is a completely integrated high performance 10Gbps test system that provides both network operators and communications equipment manufacturers with the ability to create and test the most realistic converged IP application usage scenarios covering QoS, individual subscriber experience, functional verification, high load and key performance limitations.
