Scopus Named Best STM Information Product

Amsterdam, December 9, 2005 – Scopus, the world’s largest abstract and citation database of research literature and quality Web sources, today announced that it has won the International Information Industry Award for best Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) Information Product. The award was recently presented at the annual award dinner hosted jointly by Online Information 2005 and Information World Review. Scopus was honored to accept the award together with two of its development partners: David Price of Oxford University, and Hilda Nassar of the American University of Beirut.

Launched in November of 2004, Scopus is the world’s largest abstract and citation database of scientific, technological, medical and social science research information. Developed hand-in-hand with hundreds of researchers and librarians, Scopus has achieved unprecedented growth and acceptance with over 1,000 corporate and library customers worldwide and growing daily.

In the past year Scopus has continued to build upon its successful foundation by expanding its commitment to user-centered design and by launching enhancements that accelerate and simplify the overall research experience. In recent months Scopus launched the Content Selection Committee, an independent external committee of researchers and librarians that will guide content selection and future direction. In addition, Scopus launched seamless integrations with RefWorks and CrossFire Beilstein and the inclusion of full-text links in JSTOR.

The International Information Awards, now in their third year, offer the chance for the global information industry to recognize and celebrate the achievements of information teams, information and content management projects, vendors and individual information professionals. The awards are firmly established as the leading forum to showcase and honor achievements made in the information industry.

“The Scopus team’s hard work, collaborative development with librarians from around the world and the incorporation of end users’ feedback resulted in the birth of a user-friendly interface,” said Hilda Nassar, Medical Librarian at American University of Beirut in Lebanon. “Scopus requires little user training and features are helpful and are frequently updated.”

Eefke Smit, Elsevier’s Managing Director for ScienceDirect and Bibliographic Databases, said “Scopus was designed by researchers and librarians and embodies their unique needs and requirements. Therefore we want to thank the hundreds of researchers and librarians who continue to give us their time and expertise to develop Scopus. This award is as much theirs as it is ours.”
