Ordnance Survey cleans up

WEBWIRE

More than 30 staff from Ordnance Survey are volunteering to clean up a green riverside area of Southampton which has been spoilt by fly-tipping.

The team will carry out the work at Lordsdale Greenway this Friday (9 December 2005). They will be joined by local residents, neighbourhood wardens, employees from Southampton City Council and staff from the Environment Centre. Activities will include removing rubbish, cutting back undergrowth, and clearing streams around Tanners Brook in Coxford Copse.

The problem of fly-tipping in the area is ruining a potentially beautiful natural environment. It is regarded by many as a green lung in the middle of a built-up neighbourhood. Volunteers hope their efforts will help preserve this precious space, with its abundant wildlife, for residents and businesses alike to enjoy.

Ordnance Survey’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Elaine Owen, says, “We are extremely pleased to be helping in this clean-up. Many staff not only work but also live in the area, so we have a strong interest in supporting this project. The enthusiastic response we have had demonstrates how keen everyone is to play their part in improving the local environment.”

Ordnance Survey’s involvement reflects the national mapping agency’s commitment to making a positive contribution to the local community and the environment. As a result, it grants all staff one day’s paid leave a year specifically to contribute to voluntary projects.

The Tanner’s Brook clean-up initiative is a partnership between a variety of organisations. This includes the Lordsdale Greenway Ranger, Simon Buston, whose work is funded by the West Neighbourhood Partnership and Southampton City Council’s Open Spaces department.
The volunteers will meet at 10.00 am at the Coxford Community Centre. Work will continue until 2.30 pm.
