Willie Brown to speak, sign books at UCI Bookstore and Chancellor’s Club

WEBWIRE

EVENT:

Longtime politician Willie Brown will speak and sign copies of his book Basic Brown: My Life and Our Times.
DATE: Monday, April 21, 2008
TIME: 4 p.m.
LOCATION: UCI Bookstore, Student Center. Building 113 on campus map

BACKGROUND:

Willie Brown served as California’s Speaker of the Assembly for more than 14 years and as mayor of San Francisco. His book chronicles his political life – from organizing the first-ever sit-in for fair housing in San Francisco in 1961, to heading the Willie Brown Institute on Politics and Public Service, which promotes legislation such as bills supporting stem cell research. “Righteousness does not, alas, prevail on its own,” he says of politics. “You’ll have to learn to be a listener, a diplomat, a deal maker and a warrior. If you’re really good, you’ll learn to be an honorable cutthroat as well.” Kirkus Reviews said of the book: “The scattershot narrative, breakneck gallop through topics large and small, seductive namedropping and, above all, Brown’s impregnable self-confidence add up to what feels like a genuine encounter with an unforgettable character.” Brown will later address members of the Chancellor’s Club at the annual Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Society lecture.
