Award Recognizes Whitacre’s Leadership in Building Nation’s Largest Telecom Company, Supporting San Antonio Jobs and Community

San Antonio, Texas, December 1, 2005, AT&T Inc. Chairman and CEO Edward E. Whitacre Jr. will be presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award by Mayor Phil Hardberger at Thursday’s San Antonio City Council meeting.

The award recognizes Whitacre for building the nation’s largest telecommunications company, and a global telecom leader, with the Nov. 18 merger of San Antonio-based SBC Communications Inc. and AT&T Corp., forming AT&T Inc. It also observes his leadership in corporate citizenship, with his involvement in a wide variety of civic activities and the company’s contributions to local organizations.

“Ever since SBC relocated its corporate headquarters to San Antonio in 1993, we have known its incredible generosity as a corporate citizen,” Hardberger said. “Ed Whitacre has been the driving force behind both its commitment to corporate citizenship and this historic merger that we are celebrating today.”

Since Whitacre relocated the company from St. Louis to San Antonio in 1993, it grew into a Fortune 30 company and repeatedly was named by Fortune Magazine as the most admired telecommunications company in America and the world. During that time, SBC’s philanthropic arm has contributed more than $60 million to local organizations and currently employs about 6,000 people here.

“I am truly honored to receive this recognition,” Whitacre said, “and I do so also on behalf of our employees at the new AT&T who are active in our community as citizens and volunteers. The City of San Antonio has embraced us, and more than ever, we’re proud to call San Antonio our home.”
