SAS leaders team to bring tested solutions to market and train resellers on new enterprise serial technology

MILPITAS, Calif., December 1, 2005 – Maxtor Corporation (NYSE: MXO) and LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI) have teamed to drive Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) adoption by resellers and solution providers. The SAS leaders have completed compatibility testing of the Maxtor® Atlas® SAS hard drive family and LSI Logic SAS Host Bus Adapters, expanders, RAID controllers and ASIC initiators, and are now offering a SAS bundle solution. In addition, the two companies are teaming to further educate the reseller channel about this new technology.

“SAS products and platforms are shipping now, and early adopters will gain a significant first-mover advantage,” said Brendan Collins, vice president of enterprise marketing at Maxtor. “As SAS leaders, Maxtor and LSI Logic have worked on bringing fully tested SAS products to market so resellers can take advantage of the benefits of the serial architecture and deliver new solutions to market.”

“As the follow-on to the mature and widely deployed parallel SCSI interface, SAS brings a number of benefits to the table that resellers can take advantage of in designing solutions,” said Brian Garrett, analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group. “SAS offers 3Gb interface speeds, full-duplex, dual-port disk drives, scalable bandwidth via wide ports and point-to-point connectivity for better fault isolation as well as simplified cabling and cooling, all while leveraging the SCSI command set to maintain compatibility with existing SCSI infrastructures.”

As the industry is beginning to transition to SAS, Maxtor and LSI Logic will continue to work together on ongoing compatibility testing to enable a comprehensive infrastructure for the server and storage array markets.

“LSI Logic and Maxtor, two of the SAS founders, have long been working together to bring tested and proven SAS solutions to market. With SAS platforms now making their way into the market, solution providers are assured of seamless integration with LSI Logic SAS solutions and Maxtor SAS hard drives, which is critical for rapid market adoption,” said Harry Mason, director of industry marketing, LSI Logic and president of the SCSI Trade Association. “With hard drive connectivity for both SAS and SATA, the SAS architecture provides flexibility and scalability for resellers to tailor solutions to best fit their customers’ demands.”

Maxtor and LSI Logic have also collaborated to bring special programs and events to the reseller channel. The companies are co-sponsoring a web seminar on December 12, 2005 at 10 a.m. EST and 5 p.m. EST for resellers and solution providers to learn about SAS technology and serial architecture and how it helps them design innovative and flexible solutions for their customers. The web seminar will feature Harry Mason and Marty Czekalski, interface architecture initiatives manager at Maxtor and vice president of the SCSI Trade Association.

For a limited time, resellers can also take advantage of a special offer from Maxtor and LSI Logic featuring two Maxtor Atlas SAS hard drives and one LSI Logic SAS PCI-X HBA kit at a special price. This bundle is available through select distributors throughout North America and Europe. For more information about the web seminar event or SAS bundle, visit http://www.maxtorvip.com/lsi_bundle.
