Springfield, MA – Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) concluded its innovative year-long 2007 breast cancer awareness program with stellar results, including:

* Close to $100,000 in sponsorships of breast cancer awareness-related events, such as the Danskin Triathlon Series and American Cancer Society “Making Strides” events.

* More than $80,000 in contributions to organizations supporting breast and other cancer causes in 25 states.

* And more than 1,500 women educated at MassMutual-sponsored seminars that teach women about the importance of preparing financially for unexpected life events, such as breast cancer.

“Breast cancer awareness is such an important cause that we decided in 2007 to support it not only during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October but also throughout the year as well. Through our commitment as a company and through the energy of our agents, our efforts have paid off and are helping to make a real difference in the lives of women,” said Susan Sweetser, vice president of MassMutual’s Agency Marketing unit.

MassMutual’s breast cancer awareness efforts began with its sponsorship of the 2007 Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series, which supports the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In each of the eight race cities throughout the summer, MassMutual presented interactive “fiscal” fitness seminars to race participants that explored the complexities behind real life, day-to-day situations and financial decision-making for women. MassMutual made a contribution to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation on behalf of each seminar presented, totaling $9,000.

In October, MassMutual made charitable contributions of up to $3,000 to local cancer organizations in the name of each MassMutual agency that conducted a Pearls of Wisdom® financial education seminar in its local community during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As a result, organizations such as local American Cancer Society chapters and other worthy causes in 25 states benefited from $62,000 in donations.

“Through their sponsorship of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Hartford, Conn., and donations to local chapters of the American Cancer Society, the folks at MassMutual help support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving research, prevention, early detection, and support programs for thousands of patients and their families,” said Kathryne Alexander, director of corporate relations for the American Cancer Society, New England Division.

MassMutual further supported awareness efforts by continuing to make available its ground-breaking informational brochure that informs women about financial preparedness, insurance and breast cancer. The brochure helps dispel the mistaken belief of many women that a history of breast cancer will prevent them from obtaining insurance coverage.
