Transmode announces compact and low cost 4G Ethernet Muxponder

Transmode, a leading provider of Optical Networking Solutions has announced the availability and first deployments of the new 5800 Muxponder for low cost Ethernet transport applications.

The newly launched 5800 Muxponder for the Transmode TS-Series provides users with low cost Gigabit Ethernet Transport via 4x aggregation and 4 Gbit/s SFP pluggable optics. This enables operators to deploy very low cost Ethernet transport over a wide range of network architectures. The 5800 is generally available and has been deployed in multiple customer networks including DOKOM21 a German alternative carrier.

The new Muxponder is equipped with dual line ports providing a range of configuration options including 4G Muxponder Mode - 4x GbE over a 4G line with optional line protection, Double 2G Muxponder Mode - double 2x GbE over two 2.5G lines or Cascade Transponder Mode - triple 2.5/4G regenerator. Advanced iWDM functionality is also available including embedded management channels. The use of 4 Gbit/s SFP pluggable line optics ensures that the module provides users GbE aggregation and transport with double the capacity of 2x Muxponders with only a small premium in price.

“Low cost Gigabit Ethernet transport is the fundamental building block of our network” said Thomas Schnürer, Network and Transmission Technologies Manager at DOKOM21. “The Transmode 5800 Muxponder enables us quickly and easily expand our Gigabit Ethernet transport whilst lowering transport deployment costs. The high density and low power consumption also ensure that network growth and ongoing OPEX costs are also minimised further strengthening our business case for 4x Gigabit Ethernet aggregation and transport.”

“The 5800 is an important enhancement to the TS-Series providing cost efficient GbE transport over 4 Gb/s wavelengths” said Magnus Öberg, Transmode’s CTO. “In addition the additional embedded management channel allows users to remove the need for an optical supervisory channel for nodes without DCN connection, thereby further lowering the cost of the overall solution. Both are extremely important factors for cost sensitive applications at the edge of the optical network or in enterprise networks and further enhance the plug-and-forget aspects of the TS-Series.”

The TS-Series deployment provides users with a flexible, modular and scalable xWDM platform. Initially supporting low cost CWDM wavelengths, the system has the scalability to extend to additional CWDM and DWDM wavelengths in-service. Using iWDM (Intelligent WDM) functionality and SFP/XFP pluggable optics the TS-Series provides network operators and enterprises with a true plug and play experience, greatly reducing network and service turn up times and costs.
