Elsevier and Science Press Launch Joint Translation Center in China

WEBWIRE

Beijing, 23 November 2005— Elsevier and Science Press, a leading scientific, technical and medical publisher in China, have launched a joint translation center to reciprocally promote books and journals in the Chinese and international markets. This is regarded as a milestone of the partnership’s steady development over the past years.

The joint translation center’s first selection will include key Elsevier book and major reference work titles to be released in the Chinese market, and Science Press English language book titles to be introduced internationally by January 2006. On the journal side, a selection of STM journals, which are currently produced by Science Press as printed editions, will be jointly published and distributed in both print and ScienceDirect versions.

“The collaboration between Elsevier and Science Press sets an important precedent in the international exchange between global and Chinese academics” noted Paul Evans, Vice President of Elsevier S&T China, “We are also extremely pleased that the joint translation center will enable Chinese scientists to considerably expand the reach of their research internationally. Science Press is becoming one of Elsevier’s major partners in China.”

In June 2005, Elsevier launched its comprehensive Chinese Journal Cooperation Program (CJCP) to partner with Chinese publishers, societies and research institutes in developing local journals with training and consultancy on quality management, editorial services, and electronic distribution via ScienceDirect. The initiative was highly acclaimed by the Chinese scientific community for its commitment to quality and the fluid cooperation between Elsevier publishing editors and local journal professionals. As a key regional partner, Science Press is providing coordination support for the implementation of CJCP. Elsevier has also recently founded two additional author support initiatives. The Author Support Plan assists Chinese authors with the final editorial and submission phase of their papers, while in 2006 the Author Workshop Program will provide training sessions for junior and mid-level researchers on “How to Get Your Paper Published”. Elsevier currently publishes 29% of Chinese articles covered in ISI, with several hundred Chinese editorial advisors across its portfolio of 2000 journals.
