Sivaratri is the auspicious time for every soul to get into the primordial consciousness of non-existence or Nirvana. One is required to keep vigil during the night in order to receive grace and assistance. One of the most holy nights in Vedic traditions is Maha Sivaratri, The Great Night of Siva. Maha Sivaratri occurs once yearly on the eve of the New Moon when the Sun enters the sign of Aquarius. This year Maha Sivaratri occurs on March 5th in the U.S. and March 6th in India. It is on this night that Lord Siva grants a moratorium on karma for those who request it of him. In Vedic astrology Siva primarily controls the planet Saturn who rules karma, as well as the Sun and Jupiter.

Sivaratri becomes powerful in the night. The night is symbolic of a condition prior to creation. It refers to chaos that existed before light. But this chaotic darkness is not a negative condition. It is pure consciousness without the pollution of knowledge. In the Buddha’s terminology it is the Emptiness of Nirvana. It is a cosmically eventful time where the destiny of not only the earth plane, but of the entire cosmos could be changed.
