EMSL Analytical, the leader in providing cutting edge laboratory services and products, is pleased to announce that analysis for air samples of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is now available. The new service provides an important tool in combating this deadly infectious disease.

Utilizing the same advanced DNA technologies made famous by forensic investigators to solve criminal cases, EMSL Analytical is now able to qualitatively detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis analysis from air samples. The samples are collected on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filter cassettes that due to the nature of air sampling for Mycobacterium tuberculosis may require sampling times of four to eight hours.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the bacterium responsible for most cases of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis, also known as TB, is a deadly, and in some parts of the world common, infection. Although TB is a disease often associated with third world countries, a rising number of people in developed parts of the world are becoming increasingly susceptible to the disease due to compromised immune systems from HIV/AIDS, immunosuppressive drugs and substance abuse.

“This deadly bacterium has been making a comeback in our society because of a number of factors, including new drug-resistance strains,” reported Paul Cochrane, Director of Business Development at EMSL Analytical. “EMSL is pleased to offer this important environmental test to help combat its spread and to protect our society,” Mr. Cochrane went on to report.

EMSL Analytical is a prominent provider of additional PCR based environmental tests for a number of other organisms including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other infectious organisms.
