Sorenson’s Ranch School Using Horses to Rehabilitate Students

KOOSHAREM, UT -- Sorenson’s Ranch School, a therapeutic boarding school for troubled teens located in central Utah, is implementing an innovative equine therapy program to help foster recovery efforts for its students. Using professional educators specialized in equine-assisted training, at-risk youths are able to improve self esteem, establish a sense of self worth and help address mental, emotional and physical issues.

“Our equine program is a great way to help our kids get on the road to recovery,” said Shane Sorenson, co-owner and director of Sorenson’s Ranch School.

“Horses are non-judgmental, give unconditional love and help with trust issues, which are things many of our students have dealt with in the past,” he added.

Founded in 1959, Sorenson’s Ranch School is a licensed residential and substance abuse facility for students with a history of problems with defiance, low self-esteem, running away and other behavioral issues.

In addition to counseling, drug treatment and education programs, the school’s horse ranch is an integral part of the rehabilitation process for students, making the school one of the premiere teen help programs in the country.

Sorenson’s equine program also addresses a condition known Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). RAD is a disorder marked by a child’s inability to build satisfying and meaningful relationships. It usually stems from a traumatic or unpleasant experience early in life.

“We’ve seen some amazing improvements in students who suffer from RAD after they’ve completed our equine program,” said Sorenson. “It allows them to build meaningful relationships with these animals, which then carriers over to stronger relationships with family and peers.”

In addition to specializing in RAD therapy, Sorenson’s Ranch School also addresses a host of physical and psychological issues.
