Mark & Associates, P.C. Applauds CBS for Exposing the Tragedy Surrounding Bayer’s Trasylol on Last Sunday’s 60 Minutes Episode

February 20, 2008-Uniondale, NY --- Mark & Associates, P.C., a law firm representing victims of medication side effects, applauds 60 Minutes for reporting on the plight of thousands of Trasylol patients and their families. The report not only detailed the unacceptable dangers of the drug, but also the highly disturbing actions of the drug’s manufacturer, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals (BAYRY: Pink Sheets). Mark & Associates, P.C. is committed to fighting for the legal rights of Trasylol patients. Patients and families of patients who suffered kidney failure (renal failure) and other serious side effects after having cardiac surgery are encouraged to request a free legal consultation at www.TrasylolRecall.com or by calling 1-866-50-RIGHTS (1-866-507-4448).

While some drug recalls receive plenty of press attention, this was not the case when Bayer removed Trasylol from the worldwide market in November, 2007. For this reason, and the fact that Trasylol is administered in the hospital via injection or IV rather than taken directly by a patient, many people who suffered the ill effects of the drug are simply unaware that this drug ever entered their body. As a result, many patients who suffered kidney failure and other adverse events post-surgery never considered Trasylol to be the cause.

The report, which aired on Sunday, February, 17, 2008 featured Dr. Dennis Mangano, who published a study in January 2006 that associated Trasylol use with kidney failure that required dialysis and increased risk of death. In September 2006, Dr. Mangano presented his observational study of 5,065 patients in 17 countries to the FDA in hopes it would persuade the agency to remove the drug from the market. However, according to the report, Bayer senior executives who attended the meeting defended Trasylol, even though it was later revealed that the company already had results from its own research that confirmed Dr, Mangano’s results. Bayer failed to disclose the existence of the study to the FDA committee.

In the 60 Minutes report, Dr. Mangano said he believes Trasylol should have been removed from the market when he published his study in January 2006. However, the FDA didn’t force Bayer to stop selling Trasylol until November 2007. According to his calculations, approximately 22,000 lives could have been saved if the drug was removed when his study was released. Since Trasylol was on the market for 14 years, the total number of lives lost because of this drug is presumably much greater.

Mark & Associates, P.C. encourages patients who suspect that they may have suffered complications as a result of Trasylol to request a free legal consultation immediately.
