Carrier Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Clinton Climate Initiative


Carrier Corp. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) to provide its energy-efficient, non-ozone depleting water-cooled chillers to qualified C40 cities and private building owners in the C40. Carrier, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), is the first heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) company to sign an MOU with the CCI for energy-efficient products. The CCI is a project of the William J. Clinton Foundation. The C40 is a group of the world’s largest cities committed to tackling climate change.

The MOU results in discounts on these products to C40 cities and other CCI partners, thereby improving the payback on chiller replacements. The MOU is aligned with the CCI Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Program (launched May 2007), which provides cities and private building owners with access to financing terms to retrofit existing buildings with more energy-efficient systems.

Under the program, Carrier will leverage its extensive global sales and distribution organization to provide technical support and systems design, in addition to offering water-cooled chillers for replacement equipment in response to tenders issued by CCI-approved entities, such as mechanical contractors and energy service companies. The C40 is an association of large U.S. and international cities that have committed to tackling climate change and have pledged to accelerate their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and serve as models for other cities.

In 1996, Carrier was the first company in the world to introduce a commercial chiller that used a non-ozone depleting refrigerant. In 2006, Carrier’s 23XRV Evergreen® with Foxfire™ compression technology was the industry’s first commercial product to employ variable speed screw technology in a water-cooled chiller using non-ozone depleting refrigerant. Further, the Evergreen® 19XR and 19XRV centrifugal chillers achieve energy efficiency using proven technology designed specifically for non-ozone depleting refrigerant.
