ProxySG Appliances Manage Web Usage, Accelerate Content, Reduce Bandwidth Consumption and Protect Against Malware at 400 Locations in the United States

SUNNYVALE, Calif.- Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BCSI), a leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that ABC Supply Company, the largest wholesale distributor of roofing, siding and windows in the United States, has deployed Blue Coat® ProxySG® and ProxyAV® appliances and Blue Coat WebFilter to manage Web usage, accelerate content and applications, reduce bandwidth consumption and protect against malware at its 400 locations throughout the United States.

Blue Coat appliances provide visibility into the company’s Internet access and enables ABC Supply to enforce appropriate controls according to corporate policy, the type of content or application and the individual using it. Malicious content, such as spyware and viruses, can be stopped. Employee Web surfing can be managed according to acceptable use policies and various Web applications, such as instant messaging (IM) and those using streaming media or peer-to-peer (P2P), can be controlled for bandwidth or acceptability. Acceptable content and applications are accelerated through use of caching and pipelining. In addition, bandwidth consumption has been decreased by approximately 50 percent.

“Blue Coat appliances have enabled us to regain control of the Internet as a vehicle for business,” said Darrell Cleaver, enterprise network manager, ABC Supply Company. “We have the means to intelligently apply business controls and security to our Web usage while reducing bandwidth consumption and increasing response time.”

Through use of Blue Coat ProxySG appliances, ABC Supply discovered some serious misuses of its corporate Internet access. One employee was running his own business with a Web store front from his desk at work. Another had been spending hours each day engaged in computer games. Still another had downloaded over 180 megabytes of music in a single day.

Another revelation to ABC Supply was the prevalence of viruses that could come through Web access. Although ABC Supply had taken extensive measures to protect against viruses through its email system, it had not taken steps to prevent other Web viruses. After installing ProxySG and ProxyAV appliances, the company was able to stop over 80 different viruses in the first month. “It was surprising to us how many Web sites have infections,” said Cleaver.

“The selection of Blue Coat appliances by ABC Supply reflects our proven capabilities for combining Web security and control with acceleration,” said Kevin Biggs, senior vice president, Worldwide Sales, Blue Coat Systems. “We are proud to help companies such as ABC Supply make the Internet safe and productive for business.”
