HP Announces China Research Lab

PALO ALTO, Calif., and BEIJING, Nov. 15, 2005

HP today announced it has established a research laboratory in China where it will collaborate with both the public and private sectors to develop future information management systems.

"HP has been in China for 20 years" said Dick Lampman, senior vice president of research, HP, and director, HP Labs. "This addition to HP Labs builds on long-established relationships and will strengthen the partnership between HP and China’s premier research universities and extensive research community. It also strengthens HP’s collaboration with the China Ministry of Education to grow China’s university research infrastructure"

HP Labs is the company’s central research organization. In addition to the new China lab, there are five other facilities - the headquarters lab in Palo Alto, Calif., and sites in Bangalore, India; Bristol, U.K.; Haifa, Israel, and Tokyo, Japan.

"The potential scale of the Chinese economy, with its vast population and geographic reach, presents exciting opportunities for innovations in information technology for both the public sector and enterprises" said Meichun Hsu, director, HP Labs China. "We’re excited about establishing a technical research group in this dynamic, rapidly growing environment"

Hsu recently joined HP Labs from Commerce One, where she was senior vice president of engineering. Before entering the private sector, she was a faculty member at Harvard University, where she conducted research in information management systems.

Building on HP’s research strengths in large-scale information processing, heterogeneous systems management and printing and imaging, HP Labs China is developing a research program aligned with HP Labs’ worldwide research, and partnering with Chinese research institutions and major industrial customers. A part of that program is expanding collaborations with universities under the research it established earlier this year with the China Ministry of Education.

One of those projects involves using an open source HP Labs technology to create one of the world’s largest distributed virtual museums by aggregating content from more than 100 university museums throughout the country and placing it in a massive, online database. Another project focuses on the management of a Ministry of Education effort to integrate resources from certain key universities on the China Education Research Network.

HP Labs China brings new research capability to the company’s already established R&D and manufacturing facilities in China.
