Iowa Generation for Iowans: Interstate Power and Light Company announces a $10-12M million partnership with Emerson Process Management

Marshalltown’s Fisher valve division to be key supplier to proposed generating station project

Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy Company (NYSE: LNT) and Emerson Process Management, a business group of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today announced a long-term partnership agreement related to the construction of the proposed Sutherland Generating Station Unit 4. Under the IPL-Emerson agreement, Emerson Process Management will provide Fisher® control valves and instrumentation, along with its Ovation® control system and Rosemount® instruments.

“We are proud that IPL has selected Emerson’s technologies and control products for the new generating facility,” said Terry Buzbee, president of Emerson’s Marshalltown-based Fisher valve division. “We believe that their decision is well-founded as Emerson control systems are installed in plants that today provide 40 percent of the average peak demand in the United States. In fact, over the past 18 months Emerson has been selected to supply its technology-leading control systems for 12, new U.S. coal-fired units.”

“The proposed Sutherland Generating Station Unit 4 will be significant to Emerson operations in Marshalltown,” Buzbee stated. “Not only will the Fisher valve division be a key supplier to the project, in turn the facility’s generating systems will support our advanced technology center by supplying the high pressure and temperature steam that we require for ongoing research and development activities.”

“Additionally, the generating station’s ability to supply increased electrical energy will be of great significance to Marshalltown as Emerson considers potential sites for its worldwide information technology operations,” Buzbee explained.

In January 2007, IPL announced its Energy for a New Generation plan. The generation plan includes IPL and its partners’ addition of the Sutherland Generating Station Unit 4, which will provide enough energy to power approximately 472,500 homes and businesses when operational.

Sutherland Generating Station Unit 4’s design is a hybrid technology that will allow the burning of agriculturally-related products. The facility will support Iowa’s growing renewable energy economy by utilizing switch grass, corn stalks or other similar agriculturally based products as fuel, reducing the amount of coal burned at the facility.

The facility’s super-critical pulverized boiler technology will maximize operating efficiency, resulting in significant reductions in emissions for each megawatt of energy produced when compared to older boiler technologies that are currently deployed at other generating facilities in Iowa.
