Sports Camp Offers Snow Skiing in Summer

OPHIR, CO -- As the summer camp registration season swings into full gear, many parents are facing tough decisions for their children amid numerous camps to choose from. One choice, however, is standing out for its unique program that offers snow skiing in the summertime.

National Alpine Ski Camps (NASC), headquartered in southwestern Colorado, is a ski and ski racing camp offering summer sessions on Mount Hood, Oregon and a fall session on Copper Mountain, Colorado.

“The ability for our campers to ski in the summertime really separates us from the other camp choices out there,” said Brad Alire, owner and director of NASC.

“We create lifetime memories by imparting our love for skiing through fundamental skill development,” he added.

NASC offers six, ten-day sessions in the summer for children of all ages, with an average age of 14. There is also a masters program for those over the age of 20. Race training is the foundation for the camps, with an emphasis on free skiing and free skiing drills. Designated for intermediate and advanced skiers, campers must have basic ski skills to attend.

The ski camp in the middle of summer is made possible because it takes place on a glacier, meaning the snow does not melt. Additionally, a large amount of salt is thrown on the terrain, which freezes the snow and turns it into a safe training surface. NASC says it threw over 50,000 lbs. of salt on Mount Hood last year alone.

In addition to the skiing activities, Alire says his camp offers much more than just skiing, with a variety of activities to keep campers busy.

“We offer a ski racing camp -- with a twist,” he said. “We provide ski training in the morning, followed by windsurfing, rock climbing, rafting, swimming, hiking, mountain biking and even go-cart racing in the afternoon.”

National Alpine Ski Camps experienced record attendance for both fall and summer sessions in 2007. As a result, Alire expects spaces to fill quickly for the 2008 sessions.
