Springer to provide cataloging records for eBook collection

Partnership with OCLC will provide electronic cataloging records (MARC 21 records)

Springer Science+Business Media ( has partnered with the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) to provide MARC 21 records for the Springer eBook Collection. MARC 21 records, a standardized form of electronic cataloging records, is a requirement for correctly locating and navigating to online content from any library’s Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).

With the OCLC partnership, Springer provides flexibility and multiple options for eBook users, enabling MARC records for Springer eBooks to current OCLC subscribers who can obtain these records using their usual download workflows.

Furthermore, Springer has developed its own MARC records, using Springer metadata, to answer the needs of non-OCLC subscribers. These are available both as batch-loadable files for the complete Springer eBook Collection, as well as individually for each of the 13 English-language and five German-language eBook collections. The Springer eBook Collection is comprised of textbooks, monographs, reference works, handbooks, and encyclopedias.

“OCLC is pleased to offer quality cataloging to seamlessly link users from the OPAC to Springer’s e-content,” said Jay Jordan, President and CEO, OCLC.

“We are very pleased to be offering MARC 21 records for the Springer eBook Collection to both Springer and OCLC subscribers,” said Olaf Ernst, President of eProduct Management and Innovation at Springer. “This partnership is just one way in which Springer continues to offer its customers the highest value and flexibility to choose.”

MARC records for Springer eBook Collections will be available through OCLC’s WorldCat Collection Sets service ( All MARC records for Springer eBooks have been collected in one convenient location and download file; there is a minimal fee for downloading records through the collection sets. Interested libraries should contact their Regional Service Provider for pricing and purchase.
