Nortel’s New Data Products Focus On Secure, Simple And Flexible Solutions For The Growing Enterprise

SANTA CLARA – Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] is introducing five data products and several enhancements aimed at optimizing network infrastructure with simple solutions that make it a more powerful tool to support an organization’s core business and its communications services and processes.

“As more and more applications and devices are used within today’s enterprise, a vast increase in bandwidth demand is creating huge amounts of network traffic. Nortel calls this trend Hyperconnectivity and it is forcing people to rethink how they design their networks,” said Aziz Khadbai, general manager, Converged Data Networks, Nortel. “Nortel is addressing this challenge and the security impact that comes with it by building a portfolio that is simple to deploy, flexible and secure.”

One of the most significant new developments in Nortel’s Business Optimized Network Strategy, first announced in May, is the collaboration with Microsoft to integrate Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP) protocols with Nortel Secure Network Access (SNA). This integration gives customers greater flexibility in deploying comprehensive security solutions and addressing security concerns that exist within the network infrastructure, an area increasingly at risk as more unsecured hardware devices are added to the network.

“Microsoft is continuing to collaborate with Nortel on technologies that are critical to customers who need simple and fast solutions for their businesses. Nortel brings a tremendous amount of networking and telecommunications expertise as a NAP partner enabling customers to deploy a comprehensive, open and flexible, end-to-end solution,” said Calvin Choe, senior program manager, Enterprise Networking Group, Microsoft.

Nortel’s network and security infrastructure can be deployed alongside Microsoft NAP components providing customers an end-to-end solution built around both technologies. Nortel SNA is available today and Microsoft has announced that NAP will be available in Windows Server 2008.

The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) prides itself on giving students and faculty advanced technology for mobility, complete with strong but transparent security with easy authentication, and compliance with the demands of regulatory committees. By deploying a solution based on Nortel SNA security, Ethernet routing switches, and wireless technology, UCO is providing secure, simple access across the entire campus.

“With over 16,000 students and faculty to support, we needed a solution that would address huge bandwidth needs, increase campus connectivity speeds and simplify our network infrastructure to maintain high standards of reliability and security,” said Dr. Cynthia E Rolfe, vice president for Information Technology, University of Central Oklahoma. “With Nortel’s Secure Network Access, we were able to meet the demand of the Federal Regulatory boards by ensuring strong user authentication prior to allowing student access to the campus network. With this new wireless installation, students have the freedom to study when they want and anywhere they want across campus while the university meets it security mandate.”

This is an excellent example of Business Optimized Networking.

Nortel is further executing on this strategy with a new release of the Nortel VPN Gateway 7.0 that extends to remote end-users enhanced end-point security and protection against loss or exposure of confidential information. It also addresses the access and security requirements for delivering increased levels of bandwidth to an extended community of employees, contractors, partners, and customers.

Convergence continues to be an enterprise priority as networks handle more diverse network traffic with higher reliability and intelligence requirements. Updates to the fixed configuration portfolio include stacking support for the Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 2500, extended SMLT capabilities on the ERS 5500, and five additional products into the ERS 4500 series. According to a recent Tolly Group report, Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 4548GT-PWR offers a cost-per-Gigabit of Throughput that is almost 72 percent lower than leading competitors and requires 72 percent less time to add a new unit to an operational stack.

In addition, features have been added across the ERS portfolios to enable customers to deploy a feature-rich, resilient and flexible infrastructure solution. Recent updates to the ERS 8300 increased its 10G density enabling this platform to be positioned as either an edge solution or core switch cluster solution for the mid-tier network.

The ERS 8600 played a major role in the 10G Data Center core of the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), which recently completed its 10G Tech Summit for commercial data center environments. This was a heavily mixed environment of nearly 40 participating vendors and the most significant show of strength to date for the 10G standard, which brings all the advantages of Ethernet to demanding environments.

To support the increasing volumes of wireless traffic, enhancements to the WLAN 2300 help improve wireless scalability and create new application and deployment possibilities. New products added to the portfolio this month include support for integrated location services, lower cost of coverage and greater scalability.

Marketing programs are available in select markets globally to assist authorized channel partners to support customers’ applications and UC business needs. These programs are tailored by region and include such items as partner tools focused on demand generation, pre-engineered data packages and optional services that facilitate deployment. Available now, these packages enable the full, cost-effective deployment of Power over Ethernet, VoIP-Optimized Secure Routing, Application Switching/Acceleration, WLAN and Security. They may include optional maintenance, installation and technical support services.
