100,000 bills through BillPay

WEBWIRE

Grameenphone’s BillPay service, which began in December 2006, has crossed a major milestone in just 11 months, having facilitated payment of 100,000 bills through the service.

Innovative electronic bill payment service
BillPay is an innovative, first of its kind service in Bangladesh, which provides electronic bill payment service for utilities services and for other companies. A customer, regardless of owning a mobile connection or not, can pay his or her utility bills and other bills through this service.

Simplify the electricity bill payment process
Grameenphone started the Billpay project in conjunction with the Power Development Board (PDB) in December 2006 with the hope of bringing a positive change in the lives of the people of Bangladesh. The solution is driven by the motivation to simplify the electricity bill payment process and thus do away with the problems associated with standing in long queues, travelling, limited payment hours and various post-payment hassles.

The first pilot project started in Chittagong. Currently there are 671 outlets in Chittagong through which PDB customers are able to pay their bills electronically at any GP authorized “BillPay” centre 7 days a week, from 8 am to 9 pm. Thus BillPay service has enabled them to enjoy flexibility and brought them convenience. Approximately 40% of the bills paid through this system are subscribers from other operators.

Soon be introduced in other areas of Bangladesh
BillPay has already earned much attention from the other utility companies and the service will soon be introduced in other areas of Bangladesh with other companies. Not only utility companies, but other private-sector organisations have also shown a strong interest in this new bill payment system.
