Loveland, CO. -- When mainstream parenting magazines failed to satisfy their desire for an honest, deeper treatment of motherhood, Katie Cassis of Fort Collins, and Heather Janssen, from Loveland, two mothers with six children between them, decided to start their own publication. get born: the uncensored voice of motherhood was the result.

In the fall of 2006, they published their first issue of 100 copies, featuring local writers. Their Spring 2007 issue grew to 300 copies with a growing subscriber base, with the Summer issue nearly doubling with 500 copies. Due to even greater demand, the Fall 2007 Issue, their one-year anniversary issue, will hit retailers last week at 650 copies, with over 100 going to paid subscribers.

The magazine also will be distributed throughout the Front Range, finding high-traffic distribution in The Tattered Cover locations throughout Denver, the Newslands in Aurora and Westminster, and Boulder Bookstore and Eads Newsstand in Boulder, as well as newsstands and retailers in Loveland, Greeley, Fort Collins, Cheyenne, and Colorado Springs.

get born is not a typical parenting magazine. According to Katie Cassis, the magazine’s artistic director, “We founded get born because we felt that, across the board, good, quality, deep writing for mothers about motherhood, not just about raising kids, but about the state of motherhood was largely unavailable. We thought that was a tragedy; of all the chosen professions, none is more completely conflicted than motherhood, and it’s certainly worthy of quality writing.” To that end, the literary content includes motherhood told as it really is – the good, the bad, the conflicted, the irreverent and sometimes politically incorrect realities that all mothers face.

Published quarterly, the magazine regularly solicits writing from local women across the motherhood spectrum, from those with infants to the grandmothers looking back.
