Eighteen years ago the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was first ratified. Today, the first generation of children to grow up under the protection of the CRC has reached adulthood. To celebrate the 18th birthday of the CRC, UNICEF is announcing the appointment of Ishmael Beah as UNICEF Advocate for Children Affected by War. As a former child soldier, Ishmael has experienced first hand what it means for a child to have their rights denied. Savitri Goonesekere, an author of the book, Protecting the World’s Children will discuss the relevance of the CRC in different legal systems around the world.
