The IOC President in Cairo

This weekend, IOC President Jacques Rogge went to Cairo, Egypt, which is hosting the 11th Pan-Arab Games from 11 to 25 November. On his agenda, a courtesy visit to the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, followed by a visit to the headquarters of the Egyptian Olympic Committee and its Museum, and the Opening Ceremony of the Pan-Arab Games at the Cairo Stadium.

A presidential meeting
President Rogge was received at the Presidential Palace by President Mubarak. Their discussion focused on the Pan-Arab Games, the development of sport in Egypt, and the role it can play in teaching young people values, such as respect, friendship and the search for excellence. President Rogge was accompanied by IOC member Mounir Sabet, who is also the NOC President.

From Alexandria to Cairo
The history of the Pan-Arab Games, established by the League of Arab Nations, began in 1953 with the first edition in Alexandria, Egypt. Fifty-four years later, the Games are back to their birthplace, with the participation of some 7,000 athletes and officials from 22 Arab countries and regions. The 14-day event includes competitions in 33 sports to be held in seven cities around the country, so that sport can be spread and encouraged throughout Egypt, alongside Egyptian heritage, civilisation and culture. Many IOC members attended the Opening Ceremony of these Games and met the IOC President. In attendance were Mohamed Mzali, Toni Khoury, Mustapha Larfaoui, Mounir Sabet, Samih Moudallal, Prince Nawaf Faisal Fahd Abdulaziz, and Rania Elwani.
