Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology, has received the Excellence in IT Leadership in Central Florida award from ITFLorida, an umbrella organization that represents Florida’s information technology businesses. The company was presented the award October 30 at ITFlorida’s fifth annual statewide awards gala held in Lake Buena Vista.

Harris was recognized for its innovation and leadership in developing key technologies used in government, defense, and commercial markets. In particular, ITFlorida highlighted the company’s development of advanced technology that will help the U.S. Census Bureau conduct an accurate, efficient, and secure census in 2010, potentially saving taxpayers more than $1 billion.

As part of the five-year, $600 million Field Data Collection Automation (FDCA) program, Harris developed new wireless technology that will virtually eliminate the need for paper during the door-to-door follow-up phase of the Census, and will significantly reduce overall Census costs. Innovative developments include a unique, wireless PDA that incorporates GPS and cellular capabilities and uses advanced biometric fingerprint technology. Field Census workers will use the PDAs to accurately and quickly capture information gathered during address canvassing and then securely transmit the information to regional Census databases.

The FDCA program complements an additional program Harris is working on to modernize databases used by the U.S. Census Bureau to enable more precise research and tabulations of the nation’s geographic census data.

“Technology innovation and leadership are cornerstones of Harris Corporation’s ongoing success,” said Bob Henry, Harris executive vice president and chief operating officer. “This award highlights the strength of our outstanding technical workforce here in Brevard County and around the world. We are very proud to receive it.”

The award is the second for Harris in the past month that recognized the company’s technology innovation. In late September, the company received the 2007 Governor’s Business Diversification Award. Governor Charlie Crist presented the award to Harris Chairman, President and CEO Howard L. Lance at the Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee as part of Florida’s Industry Appreciation Week, September 17-21, 2007.
