Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced an agreement with BELNET to roll out a new, highly flexible optical-data network and services to link 160 national research and education institutions throughout Belgium. Facilitating collaborative projects with local and international entities, the BELNET network will offer high-speed Internet services, as well as new Ethernet-based and grid computing applications to the scientific and education community. Researchers will be able to gather large volumes of data in seconds, process them and create virtual laboratories in support of advanced e-science programs.

Alcatel-Lucent will assist BELNET in delivering the network flexibility required to allow real-time communications among research and education centers with maximum reliability. The advanced mission-critical applications for research investigations are leading operators like BELNET to increase the flexibility and ease of use of their optical networks. These applications also require automated monitoring processes to maximize network simplicity for the highest efficiency. Providing direct optical connectivity to BELNET’s IP network, the Alcatel-Lucent solution is an optimized combination of reconfigurable add-drop multiplex (ROADM) technology and managed services.

“Research networking allows scientists to maximize inter-exchanges in collaborative projects and contribute to the best of their abilities whatever their location is,” said Pierre Bruyère, director at BELNET. “Alcatel-Lucent is supporting us with a valuable technical and service proposition.Advanced technology and extreme network flexibility are key to support new applications dedicated to furthering scientific research.”

“Progresses in research and education are driven by the ability of researchers, who must be supported by high-performance and robust networks to access innovative tools for their investigations,” said Romano Valussi, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Optics activities. “With our leading-edge solution, BELNET will benefit from a highly flexible platform that guarantees the versatility to support any research applications.”

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 1696 ROADM solution to meet BELNET’s key requirements for simplified network planning, accelerated wavelength/service provisioning and advanced optical monitoring technology to ease overall operational and maintenance activities across the network. Leveraging the combination of its Wavelength Tracker functionality and multi-degree ROADM technology, the Alcatel-Lucent 1696 ROADM will allow BELNET to use an advanced optical layer management technology that delivers the flexibility and security to maximize network efficiency and operational cost savings.

In addition to installation and commissioning services, Alcatel-Lucent will provide a Managed Services solution to monitor and operate the multi-vendor network from its Global Network Operations Centers across Europe with the ability to leverage best-in-class know-how and expertise. Also included is a comprehensive nationwide maintenance solution, including spare parts management and logistics, field maintenance and technical support. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide a single-point-of-contact help desk that will support network users in three languages and will monitor the network.

This new award further strengthens Alcatel-Lucent’s position in the vertical market arena. Research and education networks deployed or under deployment by Alcatel-Lucent include the pan-European network GEANT2 for DANTE, NEMO in Italy, NEPTUNE Canada for the University of Victoria, RENATER in France.
