Youths representing 112 countries submit 8,500 designs

HP and MTV Networks today announced that “Asian Odyssey,” the personal design of 20-year old Joao Oliveira of Porto, Portugal, has been chosen as the winner of the “Take Action. Make Art.” global notebook-design competition.

Oliveira’s design will be featured in a special-edition HP Pavilion 14-inch diagonal notebook PC expected to be available in spring 2008.

The winning design incorporates bold colors and a variety of symbolic elements conveying Oliveira’s personal appreciation of and passion for Asian culture.

The personal expressions of four regional finalists - one each from Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America - will be available as notebook “skins.” The regional finalists are Law Kean Hui of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Marco Feola of Rome, Italy, Eduardo Arevalo Lopez of Bogota, Colombia and Charles Williams of Ottawa, Canada.

The competition, which kicked off at HP’s Sept. 5 “Your Life is the Show” event in New York, drew more than 8,500 notebook designs submitted by youths from 112 countries around the globe. Regional finalists were selected by popular vote on the contest website; final judging came from a panel that included Olympic gold-medalist snowboarder and HP “Achiever” Shaun White, HP industrial designers, members of the MTV Networks creative team, and marketing experts from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.

“The young individuals who participated in this design competition reminded us that we are all truly citizens of the world by virtue of our connectedness to one another via the Internet,” said David Roman, vice president, marketing communications, Personal Systems Group, HP. “Not only did their design elements transcend geography, the call to action did as well.”

MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony and global tour

In addition to having his design imprinted into new HP notebook PCs, Oliveira will attend the MTV Europe Music Awards on Nov. 1 in Munich, Germany, as a special guest of MTV Networks. He also will be invited to visit HP sites in Kyoto and Houston to witness his design come to life throughout the product development process.

“’Take Action. Make Art.’ gave young people a voice in designing a notebook PC that spoke directly to their passions for individual expression,” said Mark Jones, vice president, Viacom Brand Solutions Global. “These talented designers are combining the HP and MTV experiences into a collective artistic vision that will continue to inspire notebook PC users on a global scale.”

The limited-edition, 14-inch diagonal HP Pavilion Entertainment notebook featuring Oliveira’s design and Intel® Centrino® Duo processor technology, as well as the four regional finalists’ notebook skin designs, are expected to be available from HP worldwide in spring 2008.
