Lockheed Martin Receives Two DoD Awards for Systems Engineering Excellence

Bethesda, Md.- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has won two of five awards given annually by the Department of Defense and the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) for excellence in systems engineering.

Lockheed Martin Systems Integration,Owego, NY, and Lockheed Martin Mission and Combat Support Solutions, Valley Forge, PA, each received the NDIA’s Top 5 DoD Program Award for 2006. The U.S Air Force was the co-recipient for both programs.

Systems Integration – Owego received its award for the A-10 Precision Engagement program. As prime contractor and systems integrator for the close air support fighter, Systems Integration – Owego leads an industry team that modified the close air support fighter jet from an analog to a digital aircraft with precision weapons capability. The upgraded aircraft, designated A-10C, was deployed to Iraq in September with the Maryland Air National Guard’s 175th Wing.

Mission and Combat Support Solutions won for the Mission Control Segment (MCS) of the Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) program, a new constellation of military communications satellites that will provide 10 times the capability of the existing Milstar system. The MCS ground-based fixed and mobile stations will command and control the satellites on orbit, monitor satellite health, provide communications system planning and monitoring, deliver high-fidelity training and simulation, and enable software sustainment. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, prime contractor for the AEHF program, leads the team that develops and tests the AEHF system.

The NDIA’s Top 5 DoD Program Awards for 2006 recognize highly successful programs that have clearly demonstrated the benefits derived from the application of systems engineering best practices, including system technical baseline control and the integration of technical and program management processes. Lockheed Martin received the awards October 24 at the NDIA’s 10th Annual Systems Engineering Conference in San Diego, Calif.

Systems Integration – Owego and Mission and Combat Support Solutions both have been independently assessed at Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI®) Maturity Level 5 performance – the highest level of achievement. Established by Carnegie Mellon® University’s Software Engineering Institute, the CMMI gauges how effectively an organization implements engineering and management processes used in performing work on programs. CMMI Maturity Level 5 is indicative of process implementation that improves quality and provides predictable process performance.
