LEXINGTON, Ky., - 10/27/2005, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, through its WasteWise program, has awarded Lexmark International, Inc. a Gold Achievement Award for its significant accomplishments in using recycled materials. Lexmark was also recognized with an Honorable Mention in the Large Business category.

WasteWise is a voluntary program through which organizations partner with the EPA to eliminate costly municipal solid waste and industrial wastes, increase reuse and recycling of materials and encourage the buying and manufacturing of products with recycled content.

“We are proud to be an EPA partner and to be recognized with this award,” said Paul J. Curlander, Lexmark chairman and chief executive officer. “Our commitment to the environment extends throughout our organization to the way we design our products and services, the way we manage resources and the way we live and work.”

As one of the world’s largest remanufacturers and recyclers of printer cartridges, Lexmark keeps millions of pounds out of the solid waste stream. Lexmark also contributes to the general market for recycled goods by purchasing recycled-content materials for use in new construction and renovation projects, including walls, flooring, ceiling tiles and carpet. In addition, Lexmark encourages wise paper use such as duplexing, recycling and use of recycled-content paper products.

Lexmark’s environmental commitment goes well beyond the EPA’s WasteWise initiative to include industry-leading environmental practices in all aspects of its business. As an environmentally responsible neighbor and employer, Lexmark established the Lexmark Environmental Program to guide implementation of environmental initiatives around the globe. Some of Lexmark’s recent efforts include achieving ISO 14001 environmental management systems certification in seven of its facilities, making it easy for customers to reuse and recycle products at the end of their useful life, and conducting environmental education and awareness programs for its employees.
