Company’s Long-Standing Association with Habitat for Humanity Continues to Help Those in Need.

Midland, Mi.-Dow Building Solutions, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company and a leader in residential building solutions, worked with Habitat for Humanity and the National Governor’s Association (NGA) on a sustainable home build for a local family in Traverse City, Michigan. Along with these organizations, Dow’s support of this project demonstrates its continued commitment to achieving its 2015 Sustainability Goals, which include community collaboration, product innovation and energy conservation.

“This project is a model for sustainable development and giving back to the community,” said Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. “This collaboration has helped build a beautiful energy efficient home for one Michigan family, and the technologies used in this building can make a difference for the lives and pocketbooks of many more.”

For the Traverse City home, which is expected to be completed in November 2007, Dow has donated STYROFOAM™ DURAMATE™ Plus brand insulation, its strongest extruded polystyrene insulated sheathing. STYROFOAM DURAMATE Plus brand insulation helps to reduce thermal bridging and air infiltration – two of the leading causes of energy loss. The insulation will work in tandem with United Solar Ovonic’s UNI-SOLAR® lightweight, flexible thin-film solar panels, to create a home that is both well insulated and efficiently powered. Given that utility bills are the single largest payment after the home’s mortgage, installing these energy-saving products is crucial to help lessen the monthly burden for the home’s future owners.

“We are a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity and excited to be a part of this build,” said Scott Young, Energy Efficiency Global Director for Dow Building Solutions. “Together with the solar panels, our insulation creates a comprehensive thermal envelope solution that will help Habitat for Humanity attain their goal of delivering more energy efficient homes and eliminating poverty housing. Habitat for Humanity is a great organization with which to collaborate as we work toward our 2015 Sustainability Goals for collaboration, innovation, and elevation — to give back to the people in our communities and help others create stronger, safer communities.”

A cornerstone member of Habitat for Humanity since the 1980s, Dow provides a complete set of insulation products to all Habitat affiliates in the United States through its national contract with Habitat for Humanity International. Dow has donated the insulation used on over 25,000 Habitat homes and has pledged it’s continuing support through employee work crews at builds throughout the world. This collaboration is part of Dow’s commitment to the principles of Responsible Care**: strengthening relationships with the communities where it operates, continuing to improve its product stewardship and innovation, and reducing its global footprint.

“Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates houses with the help of homeowner (partner) families,” said Ken Bensen, President of Habitat for Humanity Michigan. “With the help of corporate supporters, like Dow, we have the ability to offer families homes that are truly sustainable.”

The portfolio of products offered by Dow Building Solutions exemplifies Dow’s commitment to provide technically advanced building materials that enhance the comfort of living and working environments through effective moisture management and energy conservation.
